How do you fancy celebrating vintage glamour and hosting a traditional tea party while at the same time helping to save the lives of women you love and putting yourself in with a chance of joining Lorraine Kelly at a live recording of the ever popular ‘Lorraine’ show on ITV.

The charity that specialises in the research of gynaecological cancer, ‘The Eve Appeal, is inviting women across the UK to Make Time For Tea next March, which is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. They want women to hold a tea party while at the same time celebrating the revival of vintage and at the same time help to save the lives of women we love.

Every year in the UK, nearly 7000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer, of which 4,400 will die. These are very grim statistics, yet both the funding and the awareness of ovarian cancer remains very low. The Eve Appeal have set about changing this and by taking part in their Make Time For Tea campaign you will be helping every women by helping to fund ground breaking research into this cruel and deadly disease.

The campaign is now in its 7th year, and this year will have a vintage theme and once again be championed by the much loved TV presenter Lorraine Kelly. She has offered the kind of prizes that money can’t buy to those who hold a tea party, the opportunity of attending the ITV studios for live filming of the ‘Lorraine’ show followed by a delicious brunch at a top hotel in London.

The winners of the three competition categories will also be treated to a masterclass in professional cupcake making.

This year (2012) the Queen celebrates her diamond jubilee so what better time to put on that glamorous ‘tea dress’, get out the porcelain and invite your friends or colleagues to some vintage fun at a quintessentially British tea party – as it used to be. Or what about a tea dance? Girls in pearls, bunting and retro porcelain – vintage glamour amidst the hustle and bustle of modern life.

In the UK we drink 165 million cups of tea every day so next time you put the kettle on please think about the 4,400 mothers, sisters, grandmothers, aunts and daughters lost to ovarian cancer this year. Let’s make 2012’s diamond jubilee year the best yet – we’re aiming for 500 tea parties to help us reach our target of £150,000.

Says Robert Marsh, CEO of The Eve Appeal “It’s such an easy way to fundraise. All you need to do is put the kettle on and host a tea party – at work, at home, at school, sports clubs and more. So come on ladies… and gentlemen, enjoy some retro glamour, put on a fabulous frock and invite your friends or colleagues to have some vintage fun during March while raising much needed funds for all women”

Lorraine Kelly is just one of a number of celebrities who will be supporting the campaign. Says Lorraine “I can’t think of anything nicer than a refreshing cup of tea and a lovely slice of cake – particularly when this little indulgence could make such a difference to ovarian cancer research. Help out The Eve Appeal and hold a vintage tea party…. it’s so easy I’ll be putting the kettle on myself – and I’m sure I’ve got a twinset and pearls somewhere! “

For more information about hosting your own vintage Make Time for Tea party and winning the chance to join Lorraine at the filming of her show, contact 020 7299 4430 or visit www.eveappeal.org.uk for a fundraising pack

After the findings at the University of Southampton that watercress is useful in the suppression of cancer, Sainsbury’s have teamed up with Vitacress, the watercress supplier and The Haven, a breast cancer charity. This is a special promotion to tie in with Breast Cancer Awareness Month’ in October. Whenever shoppers buy a bag of watercress at Sainsbury’s they will be benefitting both the charity and themselves.

The Haven is the 4th largest national charity dedicated to breast cancer, but is the only one offering therapies and nutritional advice, as well as having a nationwide network of support centres for those affected by the cancer. Sainsbury’s will be promoting special packs of Vitacress Salad’s watercress, and 5p of every pack sold will go to The Haven. They ran this promotion in 2010 and raised £20,160 by selling over 403,000 packs.

The research at the University of Southampton revealed that a plant compound which is found is watercress can suppress the development of the breast cancer cells. As cancerous tumours grow, they send signals to the surrounding tissues to grow more blood vessels to feed the tumour. Watercress has been found to block this signal, and thus starves the tumour of the oxygen and blood that it needs to flourish.

People are changing their diets in response. Since the Southampton research sales of watercress have gone up 10%. The rise has been sustained, meaning watercress now significantly outperforms the other bagged salads Vitacress produce.

“We were delighted with the response to our watercress promotion to raise money for such a good cause last year so were keen to get involved with Breast Cancer Awareness Month again this year. We chose to support The Haven because they take a holistic approach to breast cancer care, helping people improve their diet and so boost their natural defences to fight this disease,” said Huw Griffiths, Marketing Director of Vitacress Salads.

The Haven provides, completely free of charge, a wide range of therapies which help people to deal with the physical and emotional side effects of breast cancer. Specialist nurses and experts in nutrition, exercise and emotional support provide tailor-made programmes for each person that comes through its doors.

The charity has helped over 6,000 people cope with the devastating side-effects of breast cancer and its treatment and provided nearly 100,000 appointments over 11 years. The Haven works alongside the NHS, to ensure an integrated approach to breast cancer care. Half of visitors are referred by their GP or breast cancer nurse though no referral is necessary.

Toral Shah visited The Haven after being diagnosed with breast cancer. She said: “I didn’t expect to be diagnosed with cancer at such a young age. The Haven made a huge difference as the Younger Women’s support group meant that I made friends with girls going through the same thing. The wide range of treatments helped me to relax and heal faster so I could resume normal life as soon as possible.

“As a nutritionist and cook I have always believed exercise and nutrition are the key to a healthy body and recovery and think that this research demonstrates this. Watercress is so versatile and underused. I hope this research will boost consumption.”

Watercress is grown all year round but September is the height of the season. The best locations are where there is an abundance of spring water such as on the Hampshire Downs, Wiltshire or Dorset.

In a show of support for our troops serving all over the world, Stephanie has been pampering the spouses they left behind for five months, and is now calling on other salons and small businesses to join her and do their bit to support our brave men and women fighting overseas.

Commenting on the initiative, Stephanie says: “As we all know, when you are working away, good news from home and your other half being in high spirits allows you to get on with your job much better and that applies especially to these troops who are away on long tours in an incredibly stressful environment.

Greta Wragg, serviceman’s wife. commented “When I first spoke to my husband about the ‘Hair For Heroes’ we though it was amazing! To be given the chance to be pampered and have time out is a really good thing. Chris liked it because he goes away and leaves me here with the children and he feels guilty about it, so he felt it was something special for me and I certainly felt special! It also gave us something else to talk about other than the kids and nursery as it’s a different experience to a normal hairdresser. I couldn’t wait to tell him about the lovely salon, the cupcakes, my hair! I felt so good afterwards, it benefited both me and Chris in different ways and we think it’s a fantastic idea, thank you!”
