Some areas need hair removal to be a very gentle process, while others need something a bit more aggressive. Some of the normal ways of hair removal include waxing, shaving, epilation and plucking.

One of the areas where you can apply most methods of hair removal is the legs. Shaving is probably the most popular option but there are plenty of other methods to try. An electric shaver is a faster way to shave your legs if you are short on time. Waxing is a method that many women enjoy because it gives a lasting finish and leaves legs smooth for a long time. Using an epilator has a similar effect to waxing and something many women find convenient.

On your underarms it is best to use wet shaving as it gives a clean finish and there is not an awful lot to shave off. If you don’t want to use a wet shaver then an electric shaver is a viable alternative.

The most effective way to remove hair on the bikini line is waxing and while this can be a very painful process start, once you have done it a few times it becomes less painful and easier process to complete. An alternative and faster option is the wet shave but the effect will be shorter lasting.

The lowdown:

In today’s world with its pressures, challenges and breakneck speed an antidote is fast emerging … Me-time at the salon spent indulging in facials, manicures, massages, hair makeovers and other pure pampering pleasures designed to make you look and feel heavenly! In desperate need of both I decide to treat myself to some serious TLC at the newly opened, Great Barr-based Astral Bodies Hair & Beauty salon which markets itself as a one-stop shop for anything from botox, brow shaping and Swedish massage to state-of-the-art hair colouring, cutting and nail extensions.

Its credentials leave me optimistic. Not only is it experienced in the latest and greatest beauty treatments with a wondrous line in professional hair and skincare products, including Wella, Goldwell, Global Keratin, Eve Taylor and Celebrity Secrets, it also promises to deliver a holistic approach that improves the quality of the mind as well as the body. Right up my street! But can it transform a tense, vodka-swilling, stressed out marketing exec on the wrong side of thirty into a serene, super-groomed and generally supermodelish girl about town? I’m about to find out….

Ambience:

Clearly, for Astral Bodies, the tending of Birmingham’s locks is bucking the recession. Each of the chairs is occupied by women (and one man) in various stages of transformation, the backwash is bubbling and it’s mid-morning on a weekday. Trendy, minimalist and, above all, immaculate, it’s a place that smacks of quality and coolness. The hairdressing section might be bustling but walk on through to the adjoining treatment area and it’s like walking into an oasis of tranquillity and calm, a cocoon from city living. Proprietor and head beauty therapist, Laura McKay, is a great ad for her treatments I instantly notice, as she greets me warmly annoyingly bright-eyed and wrinkle-free. So, too, are the rosy-cheeked, radiant clients leaving her treatment room. Whatever, they’re having; I decide I want a bit of it too.

Hairstyling- the verdict:

Seated and gowned up, I’m suffering from a serious case of hair envy as I eye head stylist Liann’s lustrous waves. Because my hair never looks like that, never… It is very fine and very long and has a mind of its own. While others can have a blow-dry on Monday and still look chic on Thursday my bleached, dried out hair resumes its drab, lifeless look within an hour of quitting the salon! Except this time…

After massaging a range of top-notch Wella replenishing and illuminating products into my hair, Liann then proceeds to tease my lank locks into beautiful, bouncy curls with what seems like a magic wand, but is actually a set of GHD’s. Then comes the silicone gloss and serum and hey presto – I’m left looking in the mirror at a lustrous halo of hair. I feel like Cheryl Cole minus the copious extensions and decide, without a doubt, I’m worth it!

Treatment 1 – Swedish Body Massage:

Next up, it’s time for the Swedish body massage, Laura McKay’s signature treatment that focuses on increasing oxygen flow in the blood whilst releasing toxins from the muscles, promising both pampering as well as therapeutic benefits. The stresses of modern living have sure taken a toll on my health and wellbeing, lately, leaving my post-summer over-partied immune system in need of a good kickstart. That’s exactly what it gets. I feel the tension and discomfort in my tight muscles gradually ease up as Laura expertly pummels away the pain. Lying in the dimly lit treatment room to the soundtrack of soft music, I am lulled into a trance and by the end of the kneading, stroking and rubbing, I’ve forgotten where or even who I am! Wrapped in a deliciously warm towel, my skin feels sumptuous and I feel wonderfully rejuvenated. More to the point, the dimples and knobbly flesh around the top of my thighs, already look miles better. Result!

Treatment 2 – Luxury Facial:

As far as Astral Bodies goes, it’s so far, so great. But can one of Laura’s luxury facials deliver the glowing, soft, dewy complexion I’ve been hankering after for so long. It’s time to find out!

I’ve been told many a time that the secret of a good facial is not so much product, but more technique. The magic, apparently, is all in the hands: expertise, swift extractions, skilful use of hot cloth and cleanser and a talent for soothing pressure point massage. And, luckily for me, that sums up my treatment at Astral Bodies.

After the application of a sweet-smelling cleansing concoction packed with active ingredients, a glycolic exfoliant and steam are administered to slough off the dead skin cells, open up the pores and kill surface bacteria. A stimulating aromatherapy massage follows, designed – I am told by Laura – to improve bloodflow to facial tissues and in doing reinvigorate skin and muscle, drain toxins, and wheedle out all those areas of tension in the face that over time cause permanent grooves. A luxuriant masque concludes the experience during which my feet enjoy a well-needed massage.

Being syringe-shy, botox for me isn’t an option, so I’m hoping this treatment will have achieved the tall task of making my tired, dull, dehydrated skin look softer, younger and brighter. And guess what? It does! Laura’s facial has managed to be both deeply relaxing to the mind and at the same time invigorating in the flesh. The fragrant oil, gentle hypnotic pressure and kneading has produced a wonderful feeling of lightness. My face is tingling warm and alive with vitality. What’s more it has achieved the impossible by banishing the angry vertical line that has taken up residence between my brows and draining most, if not all, of the puff underneath my eyes. Even my soft, pink, shiny feet no longer look like mine!

Conclusion:

Leaving Astral Bodies with glossy, voluminous hair and preened to perfection, I only worry now that I’m much too beautiful to eat, drink or make energetic movements! I’m a whole new woman. With my newfound tranquillity, even the sight of a parking ticket on my car fails to crush me! I start thinking about what other transformative treatments I can book in for at Astral Bodies next. Hmmm…. Gelish nails, brand new brow shape or what about a whole new hair colour…

Wallet Watch:

Quality treatments at competitive prices – you’re not going to break the bank here but you’ll walk out looking and feeling great.

An Advertorial Feature

The problem with varicose veins is that most people end up ignoring their symptoms as something synonymous with ageing. On the contrary, varicose veins have very clear symptoms and are easy to diagnose, if you know what to look for. The following should prepare you for recognising (and dealing with) this problem.

Defining varicose veins

Varicose veins are a problem that usually strikes older people; even so, there have been enough instances of teenagers suffering from varicose veins for this disease to not be limited to older people.

The disease is essentially the malfunctioning of one-way valves and the thinning of the walls of blood vessels; this results in blood flowing backwards and collecting where it is not supposed to be.

Pinpointing the symptoms

As mentioned above, pinpointing the symptoms for varicose veins is not very difficult because they are easily visible.

Swelling: As far as varicose veins symptoms go, the first sign is the swelling of blood vessels. While any vein in your body can become varicose, the problem is mainly noticed in the legs, feet and ankles. This swelling is usually to an extent where they start bulging beyond the surface of the skin. Furthermore, apart from the swelling of blood vessels, varicose veins also cause the surrounding tissues to swell up. These swellings may look twisted and ropey along with developing colours like purple and blue. The first signs of varicose veins usually show up on the inside of the thighs or the back of the calves.

Pain: Severe cases of varicose veins can result in a significant amount of pain and discomfort for the patient. This pain can be best described as a throbbing or a deep ache. It must be noted that the pain has the potential to incapacitate the patient.

Weight: There will also be a deep sense of weight in the legs of the patient. This happens because of the aforementioned backward flow and collection of blood where it is not supposed to be. Consequently, when the patient raises their legs, they will find themselves exerting more effort.

Fatigue: More pressure and weight in the legs makes it especially difficult for the patient to move about. Resultantly, varicose veins in the legs will result in fatigue setting in much faster than normal and also instances of serious muscle cramps.

Treating varicose veins

There are a variety of varicose veins treatments, ranging from completely natural to surgical. The natural treatments are used in cases where the problem of varicose veins is only in its initial stage. Natural treatments involve things like compression stockings, exercises, elevation of legs and loss of weight. Surgical procedures are usually used in situations where the problem is severe. One of the best surgical methods is radiofrequency therapy, wherein heat is used to seal off the varicose veins. This usually results in the veins gradually fading and finally disappearing entirely.

The latest celebrity to 'come out' and own up to using Botox is Nicole Kidman. The question 'who did she think she was trying to kid' was, of course on everyone's lips, not just her own. It's not as if we hadn't suspected. Anyone who can be that rigid on screen must be using something to control their forehead. After years of being in denial, she has finally come clean and admitted that she no longer uses it. Stop the presses.

Clearly, she was never planning to come out. It's just that Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox came out as Botox best buddies. Apparently, they no longer use it either. Then again, it's strange that these celebrities have come out and said that they don't do something. If they are not doing that, it makes you wonder what they are doing. Maybe they have found some youthful elixir that will keep them forever young, or they have made a pact with the devil, or both.

Terri Hatcher, formerly of 'Superman' fame, went one step further when she took photos of her Botox-free face and posted them on Twitter. As you do. I wonder what she has for breakfast. It would appear then, that she is not such a desperate housewife after all. She is clearly quite content to grow old gracefully and let the best parts go to younger actresses.

There has to be a film in there somewhere. Maybe even two films. One made entirely with actors and actresses using Botox, one without. It would be interesting (or not) to see the differences between the two, to see whether the players were more wooden with Botox or without, or whether it didn't make a scrap of difference.

Fortunately for us (relatively) normal people, there are people out there who have never gone near the stuff. Allegedly. Take Julia Roberts. Please. Apparently she never uses it, preferring the natural look and she has landed lots of lead roles in the last few years.

Transform, the UK’s top cosmetic surgery company and its team of experts has found a new use for the popular wrinkle treatment Botox. The cosmetic surgery experts are sure this news will excite the 1% of Britons currently living and suffering with this condition.

The cosmetic surgery company has noticed more current and new Botox users are inquiring about the treatment than ever before. In fact, they believe the balmy weather and the recession are both responsible for the 200% increase the group has seen since October of 2009.

Most of the patients making enquiries, Transform said, are males who have had enough of treatments that don’t provide much in terms of relief; they’re ready for something a little more long-term.

Botox treats hyperhidrosis and prevents profuse perspiration by blocking off the nerves beneath the skin that lead to the sweat glands. This prevents signals from reaching the sweat glands and triggering the start of moisture production. The entire procedure requires about ten minutes and only needs to be re-administered twice annually.

Transform’s Non-Surgical Manager Gwen Davies explains: “We here at Transform have noticed more and more hyperhidrosis patients are desperately seeking an effective treatment that will stop the excessive sweating and the associated side effects. The Palm-tox treatment was originally introduced to treat excessive sweating in the underarm area, which affects approximately one in every hundred UK residents.”

“Our fantastic team of cosmetic surgeons are always seeking alternative uses for Botox in an effort to treat other health conditions and improve the life of our patients. This has led to our ability to treat a number of conditions including jaw-grinding (bruxism), migraines and sweating in addition to cosmetic uses such as wrinkle treatments. However, we urge the public to understand procedures like Palm-tox must only be performed by experience professionals who have received special training,” continued Transform’s Manager.

The Transform Cosmetic Surgery Group is the top provider of surgical and non-surgical procedures in the country with over 35 years of experience in the industry. They provide a full line up of services at their 24 locations including tummy tucks, nose jobs, breast implants and facelifts.
