Symptoms

First of all, we need to be clear about the nature of the syndrome. The Cervical Syndrome is not an illness but a series of symptoms that manifest themselves as pain and stiffness around the area of the neck. Depending on the severity of the syndrome the pain may extend to the arms, the head and shoulders also causing dizziness and headaches. Often people who suffer from the syndrome also experience a feeling of prickling or numbness on their limbs. In the worst of cases people may also find themselves unable to perform simple movements.

Causes

The causes behind the cervical syndrome vary from bad posture (either of the back or neck or both) and overstretching of the muscles to more severe conditions such as kyphosis and scoliosis that also affect the upper back and neck. Cervical syndrome is most commonly diagnosed to people who spend too much time in the same position or performing repetitive motions, for instance people who work all day in front of a computer, or people who drive a lot or even people who sleep long hours. To prevent developing the cervical syndrome you must always check your posture and avoid positions that put too much strain on your discs.

Treatments

You may be thinking what if I already have it? Is it too late to correct it? The answer is no, it’s not too late. There are various treatments available. Physiotherapy combined with painkillers is the obvious choice, but you could also opt for a soft collar which will limit the movements of the neck and will relieve your pain.

There are also things that you can do yourself such as massage with essential oils, press hot or cold thyme or willow-oil compresses against the affected area. The simplest thing that you could do is press your fingers for 1-2’ at the base of your neck and then on the muscles between the shoulders and neck for 2 more minutes.

Try and perform circular movements with your fingers to release the tension that has accumulated at the base of your neck.
