Foods to Improve Your Hearing

Impaired hearing due to things such as iPods, lawnmowers and other electrical items is becoming a big problem in the UK. Likewise, working in the industrial sector or as a repairman can come at the expense to your hearing.

Over time, the hairs which sense sound waves can become increasingly unresponsive if continually exposed to noise levels over 90 decibels. Whilst this does not often have an initially noticeable effect it can, over time, lead to serious problems.

Thankfully, protecting against hearing loss not difficult. As well as taking the necessary precautions, such as turning your personal stereo down, investing in some noise cancelling earphones or wearing ear defenders at work, there are a number of foods you can eat which really do help strengthen your hearing.
Alpha Lipoic Acid
Found in: Spinach, Potatoes, Broccoli, Lean Red Meat
This acid is already created in the body in small amounts but studies have shown that eating food which is high in alpha lipoic acid can actually slow the effect of hearing loss.

Many of these of these foods, such as lean red meat and potatoes, are consumed on a daily basis but adding things such as broccoli or other dark and leafy vegetables can increase the amount of alpha lipoic acid in your meals. The great thing about this is that it’s not a substitute diet, meaning you won’t have to give up any foods that you love to help you hearing.
Vitamin E
Found in: Wheat Germ, Mango, Kiwi, Peanuts
The great benefit of vitamin E is that it works to improve the blood flow and condition of your blood vessels around the body. This is not only great for improving circulation, but when it comes to the ears, the vitamin has substantial benefits in keeping their blood vessels in fantastic condition, allow you to perceive sound to a much greater degree. Some of these foods may appear a slight step outside of your daily diet, but fresh fruit such as mango and kiwi are also rich in vitamin C, helping you to fight off illness. Those who want to increase their daily intake of vitamin E at a lower price without having to buy a great deal of fresh fruit can also purchase vitamin E tablets at any supermarket or health food shop.
Vitamin B12
Found in: Yoghurt, Eggs, Lean Beef
B12 is an extremely important vitamin for the body and can again be found in common foods such as yoghurt, eggs and lean beef. Vitamin B12 works to maintain your nervous system (a key part in the perception of sound waves) and also stimulates the production of haemoglobin. Haemoglobin is essential for carrying oxygen around the blood stream and this is extremely important when it comes to your ears. B12 users will also find that they have increased energy levels due to the higher amount of oxygen in their blood.
